I have a 01 dakota 6 cyl automatic 3.9 .an lost reverse.
I pulled pan an found 2 pieces off what looks like snap ring to overdrive unit.
Fluids are ok an it drives fair..whine noise in 1st 2nd.
Does it sound like overdrive unit needs replaced?
Is it removable without dropping tranny an easy change out w new one?
Is this a common issue with these transmissions?
Any info is appreciated.

Sounds like the reverse band has busted at the weld. Trans will need to be removed to repair.

its the reverse band broken and the snap ring is common you either have a A500 Or A518 transmission transmission has to come out to fix reverse band but yes you can do the OD unit in truck but id pull it out and get a shop to fix the transmission

It's a 42re..
Which method works best on shaft side removal?
Still have to get main support bar off..

Removing the 4 bolts at end of driveshaft near differential an sliding it out.?.or is there enough space on the shaft end side to slide it toward back to remove ?
Any info is appreciated

If the reverse is gone it's not the overdrive unit. If you still have 1st it's the band. You have two problems.
