give us some info -- could there be a coolant pump or another reference or common name... work order could state coolant issue and a list of part numbers no nomenclature, water pump written in customer complaint BUT failure was not pump maybe a radiator.... did you ask service manager for explanation. I can only guess

haven't gotten the car back yet...waiting for a phone call,. Was looking over my bill. Parts say: head gasket; machine shop fee, timing belt kit, valve kit.. Total here about $450.
car had been whining, neighbor said maybe water pump. whining stopped. I was driving home from the store when engine stopped , car slowing down...I turned off main street and into a driveway next to a mechanic shop. by this time, I was able to brake to a stop but on turning into the driveway, my power steering had gone out and I hard turned onto the driveway, stopped and shut all down. I did have dash lights come on......like oil pressure...battery picture, etc. until I shut the key off. next door was a strange mechanic shop and I went there. They pushed it into the shop...said it was the water pump and later showed me a belt that was in bad shape. But on the $2,000 bill there is no water pump listed.
Labor says: replace cylinder head gasket, remove valve cover t0 inspect for damage, replace cylinder valves, replace timing belt Nowhere does it say water pump. Nervous about all this happening but mainly cause I do not know this garage and my older mechanic retired years ago and the car has been no problem since originally bought in 2000. Just wonder about it all, because neighbor thought the whine was water pump. mechanic first said water pump and nothing else, then gave me the bill to okay. Just seems strange to see all that is listed and not see water pump. Have not gotten car back.....just wondering if all this sounded pretty normal.

also it only said at the top of the list: Check and advise no start; engine died while driving. did not say anything else. by the way ....no start did not happen to me. what I described above...I also described to mechanic who said probably water pump and when showing me a belt later, said it was shredded. then printed out the invoice to start the work.

As for this comment, any good tech would not go in there and NOT replace the water pump.

Unless the client is really strapped for cash.

Gates has kits for this.

They come with t-belt, auto adjusters and water pump, all out of the box.

I know for a FACT that gates has a kit for this engine.

I have done the engine work myself.

As for head gaskets and such, that will probably hype the bill to about 4000$ with labor, is the car/truck worth it?

Did I read the header of this thread correctly, or it was a typo maybe.

A 2000, toyota camry with only 1600km's?

Those cars do at least 400000 to 500000km's without a hitch.

Thats why everybody in my family has a toyota. They last forever.

I would say 2000$ for this type of repair is very fair.
Thanks for this comment. It is almost past time for the shop to close and the phone goes to voice mail, which could mean all are still working as they said yesterday they wanted to get the car back to us today.

I put it all on cards with their 25% interest caused if all okay...I do want the car fixed.

Yes you read right. I bought the car in 2000 cause I was impressed with how cool it ran when I rented one and had to drive in desert conditions.

My other car...I bought new in 1973...a Monte Carlo and its mileage is about 77,000 miles. It is only driven a couple of hundred miles a year.
