    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

With hard to access the downstream O2 sensor I decided to visit the smog test center on the advice of Wild Bill and asked if car will pass with pending P0410 code but no check engine light on. The technician told me as long as no check engine on and passes the smog tests it should be fine. He...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

Thanks for your inputs. I live in southern CA where the laws are very stringent about pollution. But it will be worthwhile to ask any smog shop in my area if this is permissible when no check engine light but P0410 code stored. Right now I am thinking how to change downstream O2 sensor which is...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

This is just an update on the problem. Luckily on this car it is very easy to verify if fresh air is being pumped into the exhaust when you start the car. So the idea was to detach the air pump hose from the diverter or air flow valve body and then start the car. If all is working good then I...

Good solution but harder than the problem itself. However, good humor is always good for solving difficult problems.

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

Nice to hear from you nickb2. I checked all the drive cycle tests with OBd2 Bluetooth adapter and all tests have been completed. If I erase P0410, all drive cycle codes will be erased simultaneously too. First time this code appeared in January 2019 I erased it as you and grcauto suggested...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

This is a tricky problem to solve . I checked O2 sensors health and they look good. Now decided to track backward. It means when I start the car and air pump comes on momentarily, does the air come out of the pipe which is connected to exhaust manifold or not. If yes, then everything is working...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

I have two scan tools and both say all smog date stored in the computer memory will be erased if I erase P0410. In April, I did not believe so I said ok delete the code. To my surprise all 8 or 9 smog tests were erased and it took me 3 months to get them all checked and stored again. Catalyst...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

I am afraid to erase this code because it will also erase all the smog related tests which are stored in the ECU. I did once and it took me three months and 310 miles of driving to complete all of them. Smog test is due next month so want to be careful. If problem got fixed by itself which I...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

Thank you so much for this information. I was able to understand view 1 but the other 3, I may have to go back to college again to learn about the wiring. I believe View 1 is good enough to troubleshoot. Here is some info from today. When I parked the car overnight it had check engine light...

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

Thanks grcauto for your help. I have most of the tools for testing if not I can get them. Just to name few like obd2 analyser not bidirectional, vacuum gauge, voltage/current test meter and pretty much every tool.

    P0410 code-- Mercedes C230 1997 --162K miles

Check engine light came on and code pulled was P0410 air injection system issue. I found air pump was working well, a small tube connected to air valve where air pump output connects has some vacuum when I put my finger on it. Once pump shuts down this tube has no vacuum as it should. It...

    Water pump leak

Thank you all for your good suggestions. I tried some except JB weld. I even swapped the bolts and put teflon tape on the threads. But still I could see a drop or two of antifreeze falling on the ground every 5 seconds or so. Did visual from the front of the car no sign of leak. Then I looked...

    Water pump leak

Just installed a new water pump and noticed it is leaking near a 10mm bolt. I don't know if water coming through threads to the top or between gasket and mating surface. I was wondering if it is ok if I use thread sealant on the bolt or wrap a teflon tape to stop thread leak. If this did not...

Instrument cluster lights up but none of the gauges move

grcauto, You are amazing and I admire your conviction and knowledge that problem is in the instrument cluster. As you suggested I pulled the cluster out but there were only two plugs attached behind it and not individual plugs for each measurement gauge. So I pulled one plug out and problem...

I am sorry it upset you for not agreeing with you. But I will find out what really was the problem and report back. Thanks Chaud

Instrument cluster lights up but none of the gauges move

grcauto, I am trying to understand what you said.."When you have a network that has an issue where one of the modules is pulling the network down...." This can only happen if at least one of the module is shorted out. If that is the case then ground is solid and not floating or disconnected...

Instrument cluster lights up but none of the gauges move

I am glad to be back and have an interesting observation to report. Ok the other day all gauges start working like normal while engine is running. So I immediately hooked up the analyzer to the OBD2 port to see if analyzer can communicate with ECU computer. It did and link was established. Once...

Instrument cluster lights up but none of the gauges move

Ok, I know the location now but if it is all integrated it will be hard to know what is what. I don't have any service info on it.

Instrument cluster lights up but none of the gauges move

I have never dealt with these modules before so I don't know their locations. Are they behind the instrument cluster (dashboard w/gauges) or outside in the engine bay or some other place. Thanks

Instrument cluster lights up but none of the gauges move

Good point. How do I unplug the modules? You mean pull out the instrument cluster and unplug one by one non working needles module such that only one module is unplugged at any time.
