    Chevy Bolt transmission/motor

No pawl??? I think there is. Take a peek at any picture of the gears, there is a coarse cog-wheel on the end of the "countershaft". Also, go to about minute 19 in the video below; the cog-wheel and pawl that drops into it are obvious to me...

    miss fire on cylinder #4

Does that one plug come out "wet" after the engine is fully warmed and running for a while? I don't think a misfiring cylinder, on a fully warmed and running engine, will have visible fuel wetting a plug unless there is way more fuel than normal getting to the cylinder. There is enough heat in...

    Chevy Bolt transmission/motor

"...simple to understand except for the "transmission mode actuator". What does that do?" Got it? What does the trans mode actuator actually do, besides set the pawl for P?

    Battery Charge Management System (BCMS)

In that other thread, nickb2 noted that there are a couple of "common" problems that relate to the BCMS: 1) Most (all?) EVs, both BEV and hybrid, have two "batteries"; a high-voltage (HV) one for main driving power and a low-voltage (LV) one for controls/accessories. Leaving the car connected...

    Battery Charge Management System (BCMS)

You had several replies regarding "BCMS" (that is the correct abbreviation, not BMS?). How about I just advise anybody interested to look here: https://batauto.com/threads/what-are-the-most-common-ev-codes.15598/ In that thread you asked me to comment, but I will do so here and will try to...

    miss fire on cylinder #4

Does the #4 plug look really "wet", or only black like it is running rich? Can you get to the wiring to the #4 injector anywhere to disconnect it? Maybe slipping out the pin that drives it at the PCM connector would be easiest. If that plug is still wet with the wiring disconnected it would...

    miss fire on cylinder #4

Even if you did do a real compression check, check vacuum too with an old analog gauge.

    miss fire on cylinder #4

    Swap the injector.

    Chevy Bolt transmission/motor

I watched a good video today (1 hr!) on complete disassembly of that; just for learning about it. I hope I never have to go that deep into one. The unit is quite simple to understand except for the "transmission mode actuator". What does that do? There is talk (in the video) about it...

Scanning for Chevy Bolt codes or live-data

I didn't finish reading that paper on wireless power transfer, but it is quite interesting. It looks like the effective efficiency, with reasonable air gap, is about 75%. That is better than what I was expecting. The real "take away" though? I will gladly tolerate Nickb2's fondness for...

    New Electric Vehicle Forum

I had to chuckle, we are going to add a source of CO2 pollution? Sure, it will be in sealed systems and be replacing more evil refrigerants, so will be an eco improvement. That's what the say now...

What are the most common EV codes?

I agree, this forum probably needs a robust HV "safety" disclaimer, for both ethical and CYA purposes. However, it is my understanding that current through your body is the key factor; as little as 10 mA through the heart area can stop your heart signals. So, I think it matters how you are...

Scanning for Chevy Bolt codes or live-data

It never occurred to me to look at what the semi-con vendors are already providing; wading through their data-sheets will be a big job, but should give some real insight. That Swedish slot-car road; are they serious, or is that just a "cold zone" joke that us warm wimps don't get??? The only...

Scanning for Chevy Bolt codes or live-data

"If, you really look closely, the shaft butted. The Imev motor shorted, armature had amp on, thing hit asphalt. After that, here is the result." I'm not understanding much in that reply #12. Does it refer to the photo in reply #11? What is in that photo? The assembly on the left looks like...

    EV Braking systems

This is a scary part of EVs for me. I have never been a fan of ABS or traction control; I feel both are not needed and are expensive complication to a vehicle. However, the need for regen in an EV results in a braking system that I expect makes ABS/TC seem simple. Is the braking a separate...

    Battery Charge Management System (BCMS)

My understanding is that the BMS monitors voltage and temperature of each cell. Does it also monitor current for each cell? If there is a fault, either in charge or discharge, can the BMS isolate an individual cell from the battery circuit? That would seem to take a lot of power transistors...

Scanning for Chevy Bolt codes or live-data

So, what would I need to get for the Bolt? My perception is that OBD2 standards don't necessarily apply. Is there a standard for connector and data that is fairly universal for EVs, or are we back to the pre-OBD days when all manufacturers had unique?

    New Electric Vehicle Forum

I am looking to get a wrecked Chevy Bolt to play with; bring back to life as I learn. Why wrecked? So I can get it at rock-bottom price and won't feel I am ruining the value of a pristine one.

Acura TSX 2007, A/T, 5 spd MCTA , "bad bearing" like sound, under light load

Even if it is a serious problem, sometimes "wait and see" is the most practical approach at the beginning. Otherwise, you could take half the car apart chasing for where an elusive noise is really coming from.

    2000 Toyota Tundra white smoke

Have you seen the smoke yourself? White, grey, light-blue... they all kind of look the same. If this has come on suddenly, it seems likely something has changed (for the worse), but I wouldn't get too far off into the weeds with diagnosis based on color until I had seen it in person.
