HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

I know I do have a small vacuum leak in the A/C Heat control system. I plugged it off at the intake manifold and it did not seem to cause any difference in the engine operation, but it is something I need to address. I'll be sure to check the throttle body plates. The intake is not monitored on...

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

My last mileage test came up with 14 MPG, and while that may not be good by today's standards remember this is a 1 ton loaded with tools and materials to do several trades. Also, I looked up the original EPA ratings for these 96 vans and even the EPA rated them between 9 and 15 MPG when they...

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

The only reason this came up is because I wanted to do that injector test where you disconnect each injector in turn to see what effect it has, you know, to locate a cylinder that's missing. Well, because it's nearly impossible to get to the injectors on this van I came up with this brilliant...

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

That's impossible. This thing has a distributor with a rotating rotor that is sending a spark to each plug sequentially.

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

I just assumed it would be a good idea not to have fuel being injected during the exhaust stroke, and that it would also be nice to have it at just the right moment to get the most efficient burn. My shop manuals cover all the 96 FORD engines and all of the other engines have an injector wire...

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

UPDATE: In the process of checking off the items on my diagnostics check list I encountered an error made by the last mechanic to work on my engine. The EVAP system hoses were connected all wrong. I'm surprised the mechanic got it so screwed up since there is a diagram right there in front of...

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

Cool, then I was not far off... it's not using one cylinder, it's calculating RPM's off the spark signal to all 8 cylinders, where each cylinder spark represents two relovutions of the engine.

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

Interesting that you should mention the EGR. I tested the EGR valve itself and it seemed to be working fine, in fact I repleced it about a year ago, but today I was testing all the vacuum lines and discovered the EGR solenoid valve is stuck in the open position. So I'll need to change that out...

What is that squealing sound? Squealing from Belts

Here is a little trick I learned.... I was replacing my serpentine belt every six months because of it squealing. Then I saw a video where the guy claimed "Never replace a belt again" The instructions were to coil the belt in a large coffee can and submerge the belt in 303 protectant over night...

1988 old school Ranger 2.9 stalling

I had a similar situation but in my case the engine would not start intermittently. Then one day I started out my driveway and it stalled, and would not start again. After running through the shop manual ignition tests I finally determined the Hall Effect Device in the distributor was going bad...

HELP!! Trouble diagnosing acceleration stumble, 96, FORD, E350 van, 5.8, EFI EEC-IV, E4OD

Hello trouble shooters. I have an issue with my van that is driving me nuts. 96 was the transition year from OBDI to OBDII and my van was early on the line so it did not get the OBDII system. I am getting what I describe as a stumble when trying to accelerate in the higher gears. The...
