Ok , I have a 2500 dodge 4x4 with the cummins diesel with auto 48re trans, 135,000 miles owned since new , trans serviced at 40,000 ,80,000 and 120,000 miles always told fluid looks like new ,Sometimes driving it will be at 2200 rpm at 80 mph and others it will be at 2400 rpm at 70 mph , its like its not going in to 4th gear.

2nd ,issue it will not drop into 1st gear ,like it starts out in 2nd ? And will stay this way until next start up and be fine.
most of the time its fine 80% , I don't know of a trans shop that I would say I have a lot of confidence in so just trying to get a little educated before I have to take it in .
THANKS !!!

These transmissions are very fluid type conscious.

Any fluid other than what is specified can result in what you are experiencing.

Also have a look at the electrical connections.

I WOULD SAY THAT YOUR TORQUE CONVERTOR CLUTCH IS STARTING TO LET GO CAUSING A SLIPPAGE THAT THE ECM DETECTS AND COMMANDS LIMP MODE(2ND GEAR STARTS) BUT THAT IT IS ONLY SETTING SOFT CODES THAT CAN BE RESET BY CYCLING THE IGNITION. YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE CONVERTOR AND SHOULD CHANGE AT LEAST THE FILTER AND FLUID AT SAME TIME.
