Dexron 3 and MD 3?

Went to buy some Dexron 3 for my 75 Chevy T350 and could not find any.
Freds discount store used to be the only place I could find Dexron 3 but now they only have Texico MD 3.

Aotozone, Advance and Wally-World have lots of other stuff but no Dexron 3 that I could find.

Will “MD 3” mix OK with Mercon Dexron 3?
These may be the same fluid but it is not clear at the Texaco web page so its best to ask the experts.

Thanks Ron.

I honestly have never heard of MD3 but I will assume it stands for Mercon/Dexron III. If that is the case, read the bottle? then it is acceptable. Post back, Transman

Well back in the old days.
It used to be GM or ford transmission fluid.
But the transmission re builders invented there own dexron 111 by mixing GM and Ford fluid.
Then GM went to dexron.
Then it got obsolete and the went to dexron 111.
Now Dexron 111 is getting hard to get.
Most parts places are now calling it multi purpose fluid.

But as transman said.
Read the label on what you get because the sometinmes will feed you anything.
If you are not sure about it go to GM parts and get the good stuff.

Thanks for the reply.

I will send Havoline an email and read some labels.

I already have Havoline Dexron 3 in both my car and truck so it just made sense to try to use the same brand.

Here is the link to Havoline.

All DEXRON®-III licenses expired at the end of 2006 and will not be renewed. That's why you're seeing multi-use fluid.
Beyond that date GM will only support the use of DEXRON®-VI fluids for use in Hydra-Matic transmissions. Fluids sold in the market after that date bearing claims such as “suitable for use in DEXRON®-III applications” or similar wording should be avoided. DEXRON®-VI licensed fluids are fully backward compatible and can be used in all applications covered by earlier GM ATF specifications. The use of unlicensed fluids and/or non GM approved aftermarket additives may prove detrimental to transmission performance and void warranty coverage.

I was in local auto parts store today and noticed they had posted a sign stating the new part numbers for dextron3. Even Castrol and Valvoline have new number/name for it. Since liscening agreement is over, they cannot continue to call it Dextron3 or they will face a fine. I bet it is still the same formulation, just a name change.

OK good news and you were correct about MD 3.

Reply from Texaco.

“Thank you for your inquiry. After January 1st 2007 GM no longer licenses the Dexron name, so we had to change the name to MD-3. I have attached a product data sheet for your information.”

At $2 a quart I need to by a few.

Buy it by the jug and you don't have to pay for the containers, its usually a little cheaper.
