Been a long time, but wanted to post about my newly restored th200c, and thank everyone again that helped me with all those questions after that last hack job of a rebuild.

The trans got really bad recently--whining, and slipping, so I found a new shop (actually a Cottman) that my father's company uses quite a bit with good results. I talked to the owner before bringing the car, he definitely knew what he was doing, very competent.

So anyway, brought the car to him and told the long story about all the issues it had. He called me after taking it apart, said the torque converter had actually exploded internally (not just the clutch, either), and had blown metal through the unit. Don't know how it continued to function all this time... And on top of that, he said the previous rebuild was a joke, they took out all the cushions from the clutch packs, the accumulator springs (and I had told them I wanted a stock rebuild).

But now it's all back together, replaced everything, checked pressures, and test drove it. I got it back, I can not believe how smooth and quiet this unit functions. Absolutely can not feel anything at any speed! No more clunking or harsh engagement, shifts are flawless. This is how a GM transmission should work!

There was one small issue--and he told me this might happen after driving it, if any little dirt got missed--as I was coming home it got stuck in 2nd gear. He told me to flick the TV cable, which resolved the problem. I'm going to drive it more, and if it acts up again he'll pull the valve body for another cleaning. It has a 6 month warranty, so plenty of time to make sure the bugs are out.

The one thing I still don't like is the lack of downshifts, but I think that's just the way this unit was designed. If turn a corner without slowing enough, it will stay in 3rd, and you really have to hit the gas hard to get back to 2nd. But that's always been the case with this trans.

Sooo GLAD you have something to work with now, the downshift problem IS still a problem. It should downshift better then that. Give it a chance to "break in" then take it back for them to repair it. 500 miles should be suffecient to accomplish the break in. If it still won't downshift on the slow turn then they should fix it. The throttle cable sounds like it is out of adjustment as you should "Feel" the shifts. These units were nice but they were never that comfortable on the shifts, it should bump. Post back, Transman

Yes, you're right, he told me to drive it around for a while and see how it does.

I neglected to say previously, he told me he extended the TV cable to bring the line pressure down, so that definitely explains the missing downshifts. I'll see how it does before letting it in a click or two. I hate to loose those smooth shifts, though.

I know you had told me you had your own modifications for this trans, I don't think my guy did anything other than the downshift cluck modification. The primary gov spring was removed previously, and he told me the gov exhaust port in the transfer plate was drilled out per the ATSG manual. But yeah, I'll see how it does before before playing with the TV.

The shifts DON'T Have to be like a brick but they should be felt. If you drive it too long then you may damage the clutches and cause premature failure of the unit. They are extremely sensitive to proper adjustment as you are already aware. Transman

Sorry about that, I didn't see you had replied... last week I let the TV in one click, I couldn't stand the short shifts any more. It was in 3rd gear before I got to 35 mph.

But anyway, I checked it, and putting it in one click has it exactly where the WOT/default setting is. The 1-2 shift is still perfect, can't feel a thing. Now the 2-3 shift has a very slight bump to it, but nothing you would call hard. It's just that with the TV out at the longer setting, it shifted smoother than a Mercedes 5 speed. I liked that, but couldn't get a downshift or decent upshift points. Now it's okay, not perfect, but probably as good as it was when it left the factory.

I have to run back to the shop one day this week, I noticed on the dipstick the oil is way over the hot limit. I called him, and he said it won't hurt anything, but he will take some out if I stop by. I also noticed it seems to shift later, and engage harder after the trans is hot. Maybe I'll check the TV setting again after I get the fluid at the correct level.
