Update: Squirted some Motors oil in/around the lower intermediate shaft (the longer one) and steering was noticeably better,

O think this is going in right direction.

To the OP...try some different lube on the u-joint. I like a chain lube that goes on foamy and soaks in, then gets thick and sticky.

Any brand? Or a specific one in particular?
Would thus prevent me from replacing the part?

Your problem seems to be that the joint is "dry and tight" which is different than "worn and loose". Adding lube may repair the problem, restoring the joint to proper function.
