Help needed! Can you identify this transmission part? 2008 Chevy HHR (4t45-E transmisson)

I really need someone's help on identifying this 4t45-E transmission part and where I might be able to find a new one. I was replacing the solenoids in my transmission by taking off the side cover and I got them all switched out. I was tightening the side cover bolts down and I heard a pop that sounded like something hit the side cover and when I went to check the axle seal I seen this (I have attached the picture). I have no idea where this came from. I seen this video on YouTube:

It looks like the part he takes off at 8:39, but he doesn't talk much about it (I thought he called it a latch); also the transmission worked on was a 4t40-E It looks like a spring to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Take the cover off again.

I think that is the "garter spring" from inside the lip of that shaft seal. The seal looks damaged, so must be replaced no matter what.

I am puzzled how that seal could have got so damaged, as the lip doesn't contact anything until the axle shaft is inserted. Yeah, take the cover off and inspect things, and replacing the seal will be easier with the cover off.

Bill Is Right looks like the seal spring you can put a new seal in but put grease on the back side in the spring cavity to help keep it from popping out when installing it

Yes, the seal could be replaced without removing the cover, but what caused the seal to be damaged as the cover screws were tightened???

I can think of nothing that would hurt the seal only from tightening the cover screws. Something is odd here, I would remove cover to investigate...

I would think that the output shaft was off-center when the side cover was tightened down. That might be only due to "improper procedure" (like, should have wiggled it back to center while installing cover), or there may be another problem, like a worn support bushing or bearing.
